Coastal walk Malta-Gozo: stage 4

Stage 4 of the long-distance hike is also dedicated to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Malta and Gozo:

• From the starting point in Sannat you have a great view of the citadel in the middle of the island, which has been extensively restored recently and was nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 (info: de.wikipedia.org). You will not get more than a foretaste of this highlight on stage 4 - if you want to visit the citadel from the inside, you should ideally do so on an extra day after stage 5 (see Overnight in Marsalforn).
• At waypoint 8 there are several interesting rock formations to visit. The entire rock ensemble was nominated for UNESCO World Heritage in 1998. The most famous rock attraction, the so-called "Azure Window" has unfortunately collapsed. The place is still one of the main attractions on Gozo. In addition, the "Azure Window" has been immortalized as a film location in numerous films and TV series, most recently at Game of Thrones (see Game of Thrones filming locations).

Tip: On stage 4, it is worth taking a lunch break in Xlendi: Of the many restaurants right on the bay, "The Boathouse" is the most popular. Not only fish lovers will get their money's worth there, the extensive menu also lists vegan and vegetarian dishes (Link: www.theboathousegozo.com).

• Waypoint 1: start of stage 4
• Waypoint 2: A small hiking trail starts here
• Waypoint 3: Sanap Cliffs viewpoint
• Waypoint 4: The ascent starts at this staircase
• Waypoint 5: From here it is necessary for a few meters of light rock climbing, the entrance is easy to miss.
• Waypoint 6: Turn left on the asphalt road
• Waypoint 7: detour to the viewpoint
• Waypoint 8: Refreshments and viewpoint. The so-called Azure Window unfortunately collapsed in 2017.
