Attention: Viewranger has been switched off!
The instructions below are therefore outdated - the Viewranger app has been replaced by Outdooractive. But don't worry - Outdooractive also has extensive map material for offline storage on your smartphone! However, a PRO membership is required for this. All information about the functions and prices of the PRO membership is available directly on the website at Outdooractive.com.
We have put together more information about the Outdooractive app here.
Viewranger (Instructions are outdated!)
An easy way to import GPX files with route information into the Viewranger app is to use the popular online storage service Dropbox (Link: dropbox.com). Viewranger accesses a fixed subfolder of your Dropbox account. All files can then be synchronized via this subfolder.

First you start the ViewRanger app and navigate to the import / export settings (steps 1 and 2). With the corresponding button (step 3) you authorize the ViewRanger app to access the displayed subfolder in your Dropbox account. The subfolder is automatically created with the confirmation (step 4) (eg file path "Apps / ViewRanger"). There you have to store all GPX files to be imported (step 5). Depending on the Dropbox language setting, the file path may differ from the example above. Instead of the "Apps" folder, you will find the ViewRanger subfolder under "Aplicaciones", "Aplicazioni" or "Aplications".
If the GPX files have been saved in the correct folder, you can also see them within the ViewRanger app (steps 6 and 7). To import a GPX file into the ViewRanger app, each file must now be individually tapped and imported (see screenshot A in the figure below). I am currently not aware of a bulk import of several files at once. When importing, every GPX file is copied from the Dropbox directory into the app's internal file system, ie the GPX files that have been imported will remain on the smartphone even if the Drobox folder is later emptied. You can view the app's internal file storage via "Import / Export -> Documents" (see screenshot B).
If you go back to the map view after the import, you will see the imported route from the GPX file (see screenshot C).

Hello Frank,
I have problems importing GPX files via Dropbox.
Everything is fine until step 4.
In step 5, the GPX files with the stages from 1 to 6 are not shown to me, only the logo and "Dropbox" can be read.
Where did I make a mistake?
Thank you for your help.
Best regards
Sabrina

Hello Sabrina,
does it look like this in the Viewranger app - the Dropbox logo is displayed, but the file list is empty?

Then you are definitely logged in to Dropbox, but probably something did not work with the file synchronization.
Are you sure that you have saved the GPX files in the correct directory or that you have created this yourself again without typing errors (... \ Apps \ ViewRanger)?
If you're using the Dropbox desktop application, are the files really synced with the server? This can be checked by clicking the Dropbox status icon on the PC. Does it say "updated" or "sync has paused"? Alternatively, you can log into Dropbox in your browser and check whether the files have arrived there.
At least that would be my first ideas ...

Update: Sabrina and I were able to solve the problem. The reason was that the file path depends on which language version a user is using. "Apps" is the standard in the German and English versions. But this does not apply in other languages.
I refined the instructions above today accordingly.

Hello Frank,
First of all, thank you very much for your very detailed and loving instructions. Respect. A lot of time and work went into it. Inspired by your side, I plan to do the circular hike in February. Today I downloaded the maps on Viewranger. On the way you described it (for whatever reason) didn't work out. Maybe I have a new update or some wrong setting. Instead, I've been successful in other ways, which I want to share with you (and other readers). First I downloaded the maps from you and saved them on my PC. Then I registered with Viewranger after I had previously downloaded Open Cycle Map with the Gomera section. Now I have called up the Viewranger.com page on the PC, logged in there, clicked on routes and tracks and then “create a route from a GPX file”. Then uploaded the appropriate route (e.g. stage 3 route) from my downloads and then saved it. At the same time, instead of “Import / Export” (that didn't work, step 3 of your instructions) on the smartphone app, I clicked “Synchronize content”. And whoosh the route was on. The advantage of this is that you don't need the Dropbox (I had previously registered ...)

Hi Mark,
Thank you for your detailed input! So far, I had always avoided creating a ViewRanger account - although I recommend the app here. I made up for that today based on your comment and tried the synchronization you described. Conclusion: This is how it actually works!
However, clicking on "Synchronize content" causes synchronization in both directions: smartphone <--> ViewRanger website. In other words: The route was saved on the smartphone, but vice versa, all of the tracks and routes I had hiked since 2014 and on my smartphone were uploaded to the ViewRanger website! This means that the synchronization only works globally and not selectively for certain files or only for one direction. I consider this to be a serious disadvantage compared to file exchange via Dropbox. However, this disadvantage only becomes noticeable if you have been using the ViewRanger app for a long time. If you reinstall the app, you will of course not notice this disadvantage :-)
Thank you for your advice anyway!
Frank
