Nice-Grasse: Stage 3

Long Distance Hiking Nice Grasse 0073 16 9

Map for stage 3

Directions

Today's stage is the highest stage of the entire hike and in the summit variant leads up to 1.778m (shorter variant: 1.204m).

From the overnight stop "Coursegoule", the hiking trail initially runs uphill along the slope of the mountain range until you reach a small chapel made of natural stone (approx. 1,5 km from the start). The path forks 350m behind the chapel: to the right it goes up to the high summit variant, the shorter / lower variant runs straight ahead.

Safety advice: The variant over the summit runs on a mountain ridge in rocky terrain, a clear view is necessary for a safe ascent. As soon as clouds appear, they will very often get stuck on this massif. A walk in the cloud fog is not recommended for safety reasons, especially if there is an additional risk of thunderstorms.

Shorter variant: A lower, but also promising and very worthwhile variant runs below / parallel to the high variant (Link: Detailed map short version). This panorama path runs comparatively flat in the area between 1.050m and 1.200m height. After about 7 km he comes back to the summit variant, from where it goes steeply down to the stage goal "Gréolières". Our pictures in the photo gallery below show that the short version is also very worthwhile.

Summit variant: On our tour we originally planned the variant over the three peaks "La Croix de Verse" (1.706m), "Jérusalem" (1.768m) and "Cime du Cheiron" (1.778m) (see map above). Due to bad weather forecasts, only the lower variant was possible for us on stage 3. One of the reasons we considered the summit variant was because we had been on one of the neighboring summits two years earlier (Puy de Tourrettes, 1.270m) and had the following view from there:

If you want to get an impression of the much more strenuous summit variant, you should take a look at one of the panoramic photos on Google Maps (Link:  Panorama 1, Panorama 2). On clear days, the view from there should even extend across the Mediterranean to Korisika.

Regardless of which variant you choose - you will stay in "Gréolières", where there is a very recommendable bed & breakfast with jacuzzi (see Accommodation in Gréolières).

Catering on the go

Stage 3 leads completely through nature and the mountains in both variants. There are no refreshments on the way. A supply of provisions / picnics is therefore necessary, e.g. in the supermarket in Coursegoule (note opening times and shop if necessary the day before, link: Supermarket in Coursegoule).
