Spend the night on the day of arrival
There are several alternatives for an overnight stay on the day of arrival: The most obvious is an overnight stay in one of the villages in the immediate vicinity of the airport. This variant has the charm of being able to set off straight away upon arrival without further bus transfers. Kirkop is a good place to do this: a small village in the center of the island, which can be reached from the airport by crossing the tunnel under the runway.
In Kirkop I tried the Hotel Piazza Suites, a completely redesigned hotel in the town center with self-check-in via QR code (Link: Piazza Suites). The hotel itself is recommendable, but there were no restaurants open in the village itself during the low season, so you should be prepared to have your dinner at one of the small grocery stores or at Lidl on the outskirts.
Since public transport in Malta and Gozo is very well developed, there is nothing to be said against spending the night on the day of arrival in the nearby capital of the island, Valletta (approx. 25 minutes by bus from the airport to Valletta, see Spend the night in Valletta).
