CO2 compensation on vacation

If you like to travel, you should make the effort to calculate your personal CO2 balance. This can be done with the following CO2 calculator, for example: klimaaktiv.co2-rechner.de. There, the CO2 consumption is broken down according to different areas of life and it can be simulated how an adjustment of lifestyle would affect one's own CO2 balance.

I found the following result to be quite revealing:

• If I only went vegan, regional, seasonal and without frozen food for a year now, I would save about 0,87 tons of CO2 compared to now. That would be a very blatant limitation and, in this combination, almost impossible to achieve in practice!
• At the same time, a single return flight from Hamburg blows z. B. to Naples with 0,85 tons about the same amount of CO2 into the atmosphere.

This means that the nutritional efforts of a whole year are wiped out by a single flight per year. If, on the other hand, I only reduced my meat consumption and partially switched my diet to organic products, it would take me over 5 years to compensate for my flight to Naples and, logically, should not undertake another flight during this time!

The conclusion for me: From now on I will consistently combine all flights with CO2 compensation at Atmosfair (Link: Atmosfair.de). The world is not yet saved. However, it would be almost unforgivable for a person who strives for sustainability once the circumstances have been made clear.

Depending on the route, a donation of € 10 to € 40 (see table) can be used to offset CO2. The amount donated is used to implement projects that lead to CO2 savings elsewhere.
