Malta-Gozo coastal hike: prohibition signs and private roads

Malta and Gozo private way or not

Prohibition signs and private roads in Malta

On Malta and Gozo you will repeatedly come across signs that prohibit entering agricultural properties or the paths and paths on them. It is said that it is not always clear in Malta whether these signs were legitimately put up or merely serve as a deterrent. Even on the long-distance hike presented here, you are confronted with this question and have to ignore prohibition signs that are sometimes quite weathered in at least two places. However, this only affects places on the hike where:

  • the plot is just a garden plot
  • the property is uninhabited
  • there is no fence or there is a passage for hikers in the barrier (and the ban can mainly be related to cars).

Nevertheless, you should behave particularly respectfully at these points and - if there are people on the (garden) property - reinsure if necessary before ignoring the ban.

Conversely, if the property is inhabited, fully fenced, or guarded by dogs, you should definitely obey this prohibition.
