GR-92: Discover the Costa Brava on the Camí de Ronda

GR 92 Costa Brava Cami de Ronda 1

The Costa Brava is considered one of the most beautiful sections of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The entire Costa Brava can be explored on foot on the GR-92 or Camí de Ronda! On the way, wonderful bays and beaches provide pleasant refreshment. There is no shortage of beautiful and tasteful accommodations of every price range - a perfect one WandernDeluxe-Holiday destination!

There are 10 varied daily stages from the French-Spanish border in the north to Lloret de Mar. Those with less time can also walk a shorter section. The most attractive section is the Cap de Creus (stage 1 to 3).

The ideal travel time for the GR-92 is in spring between April and June and in autumn in September and October. In midsummer it is often too hot for hiking and outside the swimming season many accommodations are closed.

Inspiring pictures, free route downloads and much more can be found on our separate info website: www.costabrava-wandern.de.

New: There is an individually bookable luggage transport on the Camí de Ronda - you can find information here: www.costabrava-wandern.de/gepaecktransport-auf-dem-cami-de-ronda/.

    Hello Frank,
I will go the Cami de Ronda and have therefore downloaded your maps for the individual stages and have already installed the ViewRanger app on my mobile phone. Unfortunately I cannot open the maps on my computer now. Can you help me with that?
You write in your report that the Cami de Ronda is well signposted - you should therefore be able to get around without looking too much at maps, right?
    Thanks in advance!
    Best regards,
    Bettina

      Hello Bettina,

do you already have the instructions under https://www.wanderndeluxe.de/anleitung-zur-viewranger-app-gpx-dateien-via-dropbox-importieren/ seen? You have to transfer the GPX files from the computer to the cell phone and then open them there.

If that doesn't work, you either have to rely on the signage and signposting on site (yes, this should usually work well). And if necessary, you can also use the embedded maps on our site (stage 1, e.g. under https://www.costabrava-wandern.de/gr92-etappe-1-karte/) to use. There you will find a button on the top left for a full-screen display and on the top right a button with which you can display your own location on the map. This does not replace a full-fledged outdoor GPS app, but it may be very helpful as an emergency solution.

    hello frank,

Thank you for your wonderful website. We hiked the Cami De Ronda using a tour company who transported our luggage, provided us with maps and it was wonderful. Next up was Costa Brava and we thought we might have to use another tour company (we do not want to carry our own luggage , just a day pack) but then we found your sight.

We were set to go this May, all accommodations were booked, Costa Brava Taxi was very responsive with all my queries and then I broke my foot so we have to wait.

Now I have time to plan the next hike.. do any of your other hikes listed on your site have any connections/suggestions of luggage transport companies?

Thank you again for sharing your travels with us.

      Hello penny,
get well soon with your broken leg! You can find a list of hikes with luggage transport here: https://www.wanderndeluxe.de/schlagwort/mit-gepaecktransport/. Unfortunately, the list is still quite clear :-)
As an alternative, you might also consider the following option: Walking holidays with permanent accommodation.

    Hi Frank

thanks for your super page! Last year I benefited a lot from it on the Corfu Trail. This year I'm running the GR92 - a quick question - is there anything that would speak against hiking in the opposite direction (i.e. from south to north)?

      Hello Tom,

:-) Thank you very much for the compliment! There is actually nothing to say against the opposite direction. The most scenic parts around the Cap de Creus then come as a highlight at the end. That's not wrong either.
      Have fun hiking!

    Frank,
Thank you for a great and informative website. Every year 5 long time friends get together for a multi day hike. Costa Brava is next on our list. We are all over 70 years old. Fit but we don't have the endurance we used to have. When I look at GR-92 I worry about the length of the stages for us since there appears to be so much up and down. So I am thinking that we could break up the first 3 stages into 4. Portbou, Colera, Llanca, El Porta de la Salva, Cadaqués. Does this make sense to you? I suppose we could do it either direction. We will have a car and friend with a car who will transport our bags. I appreciate any thoughts you have on this. Thanks again. bob

      Hello Bob!
It's great that you're still on the road every year! I wish that too when I hit 70! The first three stages are really beautiful and a good choice. Proposal from my side to equalize the three stages:
1.) At the beginning in Portbou, let your friend drive you up the "Coll del Frare" by car (or a taxi) - then you will save the first strenuous climb. That's 7 minutes by car from Portbou (Link: https://goo.gl/maps/CoKPw4rpaFn6GVmR7). The daily destination of this stage would then be Llança (approx. 8,5 km from the Coll del Frare).
2.) Stage 2 then from Llança to Port de la Selva (approx. 8-9 km, fairly flat).
3.) From Port de la Selva to Cadaqués it is about 12 km and 500 meters in altitude. This stage cannot be shortened very well, it may be possible to drive to the following point by car: https://goo.gl/maps/3QSg1rJ58wK836CB7). From there it is about 1,5 km until you come across the GR 92 at "Mas Bufadors".
4.) On the fourth day I would not hike from Cadaqués in the direction of Roses but instead in the opposite direction to the lighthouse "Far del Cap de Creus" (about 7 km one way).
      I hope this helps you!
      Regards
      Frank

    Hello Frank,
spontaneously booked a flight to Barcelona yesterday and want to walk the Camino de Ronda - what is the best way to get to the starting point? - is there a bus?
Actually, I would have considered the route around Girona, but now I can't find the tour for it anymore, it's around 140km.

Haven't got any accommodation yet and just wanted to start running, what do you advise me to do?

    LG from Austria,

      Hello Sarah!
Then I wish you a lot of fun! Here I have actually described all the information about the journey: https://www.costabrava-wandern.de/category/gr-92-anreise/.
When you say circular hiking trail, you probably mean this one: http://www.camideronda.com/de/ruta/rundweg.html.
When it comes to accommodation, I would advise you to do some research beforehand - it's high season right now, so it can quickly be fully booked or very expensive. In the interior of the country it may be a little easier with accommodation - that speaks for the circular hiking variant.

    Hello Frank
I am going to be in Barcelona beginning of November and would love to walk the costa brava walk then. Just wondering what budget accommodation is available this time of year or is it just expensive places. My Australian dollar doesn't get much for the Euro so I'm wanting it to save on accommodation as much as possible.
    Thank you so much

      Hi Linda,

I have a separate website for the Costa Brava. There is, among other things, a tool with which you can quickly get an overview of the accommodation prices: https://www.costabrava-wandern.de/en/tabular-overview-travel-planning-for-the-gr-92/. You simply enter a start date in November and can then click through the individual milestones relatively quickly.
In November you have a good chance - there are quite a few guesthouses with prices between 70€ and 80€ per night in the low season.

    Hello Frank ,
Mijn vriend en ik zouden graag in December met de Kerstdagen de gr92 afstappen voor een etappe of 5, of 6 maar Weten not good was we can terugkeren to België.
we zijn van plan om van portbou tot begur te walk.
I haven't had direct calls from there to Barcelona of Gerona, just from the moeilijkheid, hoe geraken we daar ?

      Hello Vero and Wim,

I usually use the following website to look up appropriate connections: moovitapp.com. I have also collected quite a lot of information about the journey (and return) here: https://www.costabrava-wandern.de/category/gr-92-anreise/.
From Begur there are only bus connections with changes in the direction of Barcelona or Girona, there do not seem to be any direct connections. An alternative would be a transfer by taxi, here I can costabravataxi.com . Recommend

      I hope this helps you!

    Hello Frank
I'm wondering if there are a lot of people on the trail. I like to travel alone and did the GR65 in France this past May; it worked for me because I was never really alone. FYI- I am 76 but very fit and active. I don't carry my own pack so from what I am reading there is a taxi service with costabravataxi.de. How difficult will it be for an English speaking person with surviving Spanish? I live in the Canadian Rockies so am using altitude.

    Thanks
    Gloria

      Hello Gloria,

It's great that you're still so active at 76! That's my dream too, if I can go on such extensive hikes!
Regarding your questions: In my opinion, the GR 92 attracts a lot of hikers - this is partly because the Costa Brava is a popular holiday region and therefore there are many half-day and day hikers. Only on stage 9 is it quite lonely (leads through the hinterland, quite strenuous). If I were you, I would therefore concentrate on the first stages up to a maximum of the 8th stage.
The main hiking season is April/May/June and September/October. Then on most routes you will probably meet other people at least every 30-60 minutes on average. Is that enough for you? Or would you like to join other long-distance hikers along the way?
And you should get along pretty well with English and “Survival Spanish” on the Costa Brava.

I hope this is helping you!

      Regards
      Frank

We are currently on the GR92 from Blanes to Portbou, and took the boat from Roses to Cadaques. We think it's a very nice change to see the coast from the water. The boat trip took 45 minutes and cost €2024 at the end of October 15. Tickets can be bought on site.

Hello Frank, my wife and I are currently sitting at the airport in Girona full of new impressions and waiting for the return flight. Thanks to your great site we had a wonderful hike from Portbou to Palamos. With temperatures sometimes reaching 30 degrees, the stages were sometimes very strenuous, but it was ideal for swimming. For orientation purposes, we strongly recommend downloading your GPS tracks and the Outdooractive app, as the path markings are quite patchy, especially at junctions and forks in the road.
Thank you very much for your work and Petra and Gerd hope you continue to have fun hiking

    Hi,
Myself and a friend are planning a running holiday if approx one week and wondered if you could recommend which stages of the GR92 would be suitable in November.
    We are experienced mountain runners.
We would want baggage transfer between stages and would be happy running 15-20 miles per day.
We would be flying from the UK so would Barcelona or Girona be the best airport?
    many thanks.

    Hello Frank,
We are planning to hike the GR 92 in October. We would like to leave our car in Portbou during this period. Do you have any tips on where we can park the car safely...even for a fee?
    With kind regards,

      Hello Heidrun,

Unfortunately, I don't have a tip for this directly in Portbou (probably rather difficult, as it is very narrow), but there are some paid parking options / underground parking spaces in the wider area from the Spanish provider "SABA": https://www.saba.es/en/searchSpecifically, for example, in Figueres near the train station with a multi-day rate, the underground car park “Parking Saba El Firal” (Link: https://www.saba.es/en/parking-figueres/parking-saba-el-firal). You would then have to take the train to the starting point in Portbou, but the return journey would be a little shorter.
      Regards
      Frank
