ITA-SLO: From Trieste to Slovenia and back (5 days)

Circular hiking trail Trieste Section 5 The Val Rosandra nature park offers spectacular views

The area around Trieste is ideal for hiking: The limestone plateau of the Slovenian Karst Mountains in this area pushes up to a few hundred meters from the Italian Adriatic, creating a varied landscape of bizarre rock formations, rugged slopes, shady deciduous forests and carefully manicured vineyards.

Inspired by the exciting crime novels by Veit Heinichen, in which Commissario Laurenti investigates in Trieste and which have made us dream of a vacation in Trieste for years, this five-day circular hike has now emerged, on which one gets to know the beauty of the province of Trieste almost completely and also stayed in nearby Slovenia once.

The "Trieste circular route" designed by us runs mostly on the Alpe-Adria-Trail or the Via Alpina. One of the scenic highlights of the Trieste Karst is definitely the climbing and mountaineering paradise "Val Rosandra", through which our last stage leads.

Nevertheless, in our opinion it is not just the landscape that makes this long-distance hike so special: it is the many cultural and culinary specialties of this region that are not only influenced by Italian but also by Austrian, Slovenian and Croatian influences. In addition, the city of Trieste is a very worthwhile city trip destination, which, in contrast to many other northern Italian cities, is not overcrowded even in the high season, but has remained pleasantly quiet and largely untouristic.

The ideal travel time for Trieste and the surrounding area is in spring between April and June and in autumn in September and October. In July and August it is often too hot for hiking and in winter the weather is less stable.

Inspiring pictures, free route downloads and much more can be found on our separate info website: www.rundwanderweg-triest.de.

    Hello Frank!
As announced, our experiences on your new tour around Trieste. You have put together a very varied and beautiful tour again. We made our journey by car, which we parked for a week in the parking garage in Trieste (Parclick.de). It went quite well so far, only the info point where you get the exit ticket was not open at the weekend. But it wasn't too bad, we solved it after our tour. For the bus trips you should note that there are no tickets on the bus to buy, so get them beforehand (we were lucky and were able to travel without a ticket once and on the way back a nice, older couple stamped us on his stiff :).
For an overnight stay in Trieste, we would also recommend the B&B La Maison de Lulu. Very clean, cheap, new and super central.
In Sistiana we stayed at B&B Bonavia.
Super nice landlord and great breakfast.
We walked the whole route with good outdoor shoes, as there were hardly any vertical meters to conquer (mountain shoes are not necessary).
IMPORTANT: We would NOT recommend the tour without gps tracks !!!!
    Thanks again!
    Beatrice

      Hello Beatrice,
Thank you for your reply! If I remember correctly, you wrote about your experiences on the Amalfi Coast a few weeks ago, right? It's great that you also enjoyed the tour around Trieste! I think you are the first to be around Trieste - the site has only been online since the turn of the year. I'll include some of your hints as soon as I find the time. But in a few days I will follow up for the first time Faro :-)
      Greetings from Hamburg!

    Hello Frank,
but we are curious what you are made of Faro have to report. In addition to our comment, we would like to say that this tour has its own charm. You don't wander through sparsely populated areas and you always come through localities, you can decide whether to go to a cafe, ice cream parlor or go shopping. You often meet people, so to speak, so you get to know the area a little from the people. For example, it is not always obvious when a “dobre dan” or a “bon giorno” is called for. Even if you ask the landlords a little (you can get on well with English) you will always find out interesting things. We were also lucky that we got to know the tradition "Osmice". We have already wondered what the bushes and signs at intersections mean. It turned out that this shows the way to farms that offer their homemade products (bacon, ham, cheese ... and wine from the barrel) for consumption. We were among the locals and really enjoyed the snack. It was really delicious.
After such stops it became calmer again. Thanks to your selection of the route (I think there were 3 or 4 nature trails), you could also learn interesting things if you like it.
For the first three stages we were really lucky with the weather, sun and an incredible view of the still snow-capped mountains. During the last two days it almost blew our salami out of the bread (Bora) but it didn't rain. Would we do the tour again in late March? Yes and no. A week or two later the vegetation would be wider and it would be more green but maybe a bit overcrowded again. It was great as it was, but as I said, we were lucky with the weather.

      Hello you two,
thank you for your addition! I think the one with the “own charm” is a very appropriate description for this area or this hiking tour. While hiking you get to know a very special, rather atypical piece of Italy. The area is not as well known and certainly not as spectacular when hiking as the Amalfi Coast, but it has its own charm. A stop in one of the osmize definitely belongs to it! Nice that you enjoyed it there!
      Regards
      Frank

Like every year, I organize a tour with MTB for me and my 2 MTB friends.
In April we want to follow the GR92 from Port Bou, then on via Girona, Vic, Montserrat and back down to Barcelona.
Question: Do you have an opinion about the MTB cycling of the gr 92s ... thank you in advance

      Hello anthony,
unfortunately only saw your question now. Also attached to the wrong post :-)
Most of the time, the GR92 is not a cycle path. The few sections that are designated as MTB routes can be found here: https://mtb.waymarkedtrails.org/#routelist?map=9!41.8668!1.8402

    Dear Sir or Madam,

I work for Umfulana GmbH, a small individual tour operator, and we would like to add the Triestiner Karst to our portfolio as an excursion tip for our customers.
The pictures would appear with a short description text in the personalized travel documents that our customers receive from us.
We would be very happy if you would agree to this and if you could provide us with images for this purpose.

If you have any questions, we are of course at your disposal at any time.

    With kind regards,
    Kirsten Rabe
