CAI-300: The Amalfi Coast on foot (6 days)

CAI 300 Amalfi hiking trail 1

The Italian Amalfi Coast is one of the most famous cliffs in the world and attracts travelers from all over the world with its typical Italian charm! The CAI-300 hiking trail run by the Italian Alpine Club, on the other hand, has remained relatively unknown: in six days you can hike and admire the entire Amalfi Coast on this half-height trail. There are many small villages and seaside resorts between Salerno in the east and Sorrento in the west - each one more picturesque than the other.

There is of course accommodation on the Amalfi Coast for every taste and for almost every budget: We particularly like to mention the many small family businesses that pamper their guests as Bed & Breakfast or agriturismo with sometimes only four or five rooms.

The ideal travel time for the Amalfi Coast is in spring between April and June and in autumn in September and October. In midsummer it is often too hot for hiking, in the off-season the weather is less stable.

Inspiring pictures, free route downloads and much more can be found on our separate info website: www.amalfi-wanderweg.de.

    Good day,

First of all, I want to thank you for the great information and the effort you put in. In the coming year we will make a pilgrimage on the Archangel Michael Way for 14 days. After that we plan to spend 7 more days on the Amalfi Coast. For this we are looking for a nice accommodation from which you can explore the coast by bus and on foot. We had already thought of the agriturismo in San Colli di san Pietro. Is there any better or better located accommodation?

We would be very happy to receive an answer!

    Thank you and best regards

      Hello Martina and Johannes,

the district of “Piano di Sorrento” belonging to “Colli di San Pietro” actually offers many advantages in terms of its location (including good bus connections, as all buses coming from Sorrento in the direction of Positano and Amalfi pass by here; compared to the Hot spots Amalfi and Positano (relatively affordable prices). But if you actually have seven days on the Amalfi Coast, I would not choose one but two different locations for you: one more to the east (e.g. near Amalfi) and one more to the west (e.g. in Colli di San Pietro, but my tip is the Lubra Casa Relax would be a little further west). Then you are less bound to bus timetables and can do a lot of walking. One should not underestimate the travel times by bus on the coastal road: one is the official travel time, the other is the travel time if there is traffic jam on the coastal road.
      Have fun pilgrimage!

    Good morning from Berlin.
I've been doing tours on the Gulf of Naples for a long time.
Now your site is also great.
But now the loading of the tracks on my OREGON 700 is on strike.
You have no tracks to load GPX.
Or what am I doing wrong?
    Thank you for an answer.

    Hello from Erfurt,

I will hike the Amalfi Coast with a friend at the end of April.
    Exactly as you described it.
Your site is wonderful and very tempting!
My question: Is it possible to hike there without GPS?
    Only with your differentiated description?
    That would be great.
Otherwise we will “manage” that too.

I still have a hiking suggestion: the Portuguese Way of St. James, from Porto to Santiago de Compostela.
    Do you have any experience?
There are 2 routes and I am unsure which is the better one.

      Hello Heidi!
Thanks for the compliment :-) We tried very hard to describe the hiking route in detail and to explain all the junctions, but we always refer to the waypoints that are marked on the map or which one you like here described on your smartphone. I think the hike will be a lot more relaxed if you use an appropriate app on your phone. It is almost impossible to get lost.

Unfortunately we have no experience with the Portuguese Way of St. James.
      Many greetings to Erfurt!

        Hello Frank,
I had ordered the two PDFs for the Amalfi Coast hike (e-book and hiking maps) and had already paid for each one. I received the PDF's as an email and didn't save them straight away. Unfortunately the email was accidentally deleted and of course the PDF's too. Would you please arrange for the files to be sent to me again.

        Thanks and Regards

By the way, the high trail from Pogerola is accessible again. Your GPS data together with the route description was great!

    Good day,

and thank you for the detailed information about the Amafi Coast. Two years ago my wife and I walked the “Via dei Limoni” section and we were thrilled - now we would like to join a longer hike lasting several days.

My problem is: I am not at all free from giddiness or am afraid of heights. The "Via dei Lemoni" section was easy for me to take - but a photo like this one triggers outbreaks of sweat rather than admiration in me: https://www.wanderndeluxe.de/wp-content/uploads/CAI-300-Amalfiwanderweg-7.jpg

Could you perhaps make a recommendation as to which sections are secured as far as possible to the cliffs by walls, railings etc.? That would be helpful!

    Thank you in advance,

    Markus

      Hi Mark,
luckily I am not afraid of heights, it is difficult for me to really judge that. Therefore I try the following overview:

      • Stage 1: unpaved mountain hiking trail in the hinterland
      • Stage 2: paved pedestrian paths, steep stairs downhill
      • Stage 3: paved pedestrian paths, steep stairs uphill, along the street
      • Stage 4: unpaved hiking trail high above the coast, steep stairway downhill
      • Stage 5: unpaved hiking trail directly on the coast
      • Stage 6: unpaved hiking trail to Punta Campanella, return to Sorrento via paved side streets

The above information refers to the predominant nature of the path, smaller sections of each stage can differ
The photo you linked comes from the “Sentiero Degli Dei” (stage 4). You should definitely skip this stage.
I hope this helps you a little with the assessment!

    Hello Frank,
that sounds really good. So good that I'm considering walking the trail in May. Since I am traveling alone, it always calms me down when I meet other people every now and then. Can you say something about how "lonely" you are on the route?

      Hello Claudia,
how lonely you are on the track depends a bit on the season and of course on the stage. The beginning of May is the main hiking season and how Nicole Word has just gotten around that the Amalfi hiking trail has gotten around so that you may even meet other long-distance hikers in May.
Stage 5 is the loneliest in my opinion, but you can also get through small towns there and meet some locals or hikers along the way.
I hope that will help you further!

Thank you for your feedback! The fact that you were able to carry the trekking poles in your hand luggage is of course great. But I'm not sure whether this is really possible with all airlines - my research had turned out something else. That's why I prefer to be a little more careful with my answers ...

    Hello Frank,
First of all, thank you very much for your information and the GPS track of the tour. We walked the entire route in early May and it was one of the most beautiful multi-day tours we have ever done. The route is as diverse and varied as I would never have thought when studying maps.
However, we had not received any of the suggested overnight stays. Perhaps we were too early to book in February? We easily found alternatives via Bookingcom, of which we particularly liked Villa Maria in Pogerola and the Oleum in Massa Lubrense.
We would not have done this hike without their side. Overall rating: very good
We would be happy to take another suggestion.

Thank you for the excellent preparation of the hike. I did the tour with my son. Additions were: boat trip from Positano to Amalfi and back. You have a nice view of the distance covered. It should be noted that the regular buses are overcrowded from 17:00 p.m. and are therefore refused to be taken along. (Taxi)
We stayed two more days and visited Pompeii, Vesuvius and the Herculaneum.

    Hello,
Marie

    Hi there,

Amazing wealth of information - thank you so much.
    Quick question
Planning week long hike in Europe in early March 2022. Torn between Almalfi Coast and Costa Brava (short section of this one). Which would you recommend? I'm an experienced hiker and quite fit but will be on my own so looking for something where its not too hard to find the way.
Also think accommodation might be easier to find in Almalfi coast in 'off season'.
    Any strong thoughts?

      Hello, Emma,
For the beginning of March I would actually recommend one of the following two hikes because of the weather: La Gomera or Malta and Gozo. Or are these two travel destinations out of the question for you? Maybe you've already been there?
If you download the GPS routes before the hike, you are well equipped on the Costa Brava and the Amalfi Coast - even if you are traveling alone. There should be enough accommodation in both destinations at the beginning of March.

    Hallo,
I've been browsing your site for a few hours and I love it.
I am considering hiking the Sentiero Degli Dei at the end of March, but I have read that it is not entirely free from giddiness. I live in Salzburg and am often in the mountains, last year in the Dolomites - so I have an affinity for mountains. Nevertheless, the height sometimes does bother me when it goes quite down on the side and the path is narrow or exposed. Is this trail exposed or narrow? According to the photos, it also looks rather unpaved?
I realize that everyone judges this differently, but maybe you can give an estimate of the nature of the path.

    Thank you!!

      Hello Jenny!
Glad to hear you enjoy browsing here! Flavia recently gave very detailed feedback on the subject of having a head for heights on the Sentiero Degli Dei, which you can find here: https://www.amalfi-wanderweg.de/erfahrungsberichte-feedback-fragen-zum-wandern-an-der-amalfikueste/#comment-11497. The trail is narrow, a dirt path and partially exposed. However, this only applies to stage 4 (see BILD). On the other stages there are usually no problems with a head for heights.
I hope this helps you further!

    Hello Frank,

my husband and I hiked the first five stages of the Amalfi Coast at the beginning of June 22 and are thrilled. The tours were fantastically beautiful and we were the only ones on the paths. Your stages are well described, we found the entrances easily, but many of the paths are no longer maintained. Right at the first stage – the Raito staircase, the path is overgrown with bushes and thorns. It's a shame, because the paths are simply breathtakingly beautiful and the best thing - you're alone with nature. It doesn't get any better than that. Thank you very much for your elaboration.

    Hi Frank
Last year I followed your description of "Liguria" and was thrilled. Thanks again for that! This year it will be the Amalfi Coast.
My plan is to combine the trek with a couple of days in Naples/Capri; in total approx. 2 weeks.
Questions for you - and it would be nice if you found time for feedback
    – second half of April fits the climate and stuff? Liguria was a dream at that time. Amalfi Coast is even further south - so it should fit.
    – would I want to take a day off during the tour – which place would you recommend?
    – End of the Sorrento tour: you described Sorrento as expensive. Would find cheap accommodation - is it worth spending a night there before heading back to Naples? Or isn't it that nice anyway?

That for starters. I'm at the very beginning with my ideas and my planning.
    Many thanks! Claudia

I'm in Sorrento at the moment taking care of my wounds by the pool :)
First of all, thank you very much for the tour data, it would have been almost impossible without them in connection with Google maps, as many junctions are not marked or overgrown. Three of us stood at a crossroads and puzzled. I hike a lot (Austria), but the routes are tough (as always, too much luggage).
Staying the night without a long advance booking is not easy and sometimes expensive. In Amalfi and Positano there was no single room under 210 euros, in the mountains it was cheaper, nicer and better food, for example Costa Blue or Piccolo Paradiso.
On the 5th stage I had rain and that was not to be underestimated (slippery), otherwise only blue sky.

Hello Frank, what a great site you have built there! We have been hiking in the Alps for many years, mostly in the Dolomites, but are slowly getting older and no longer really need that hut feeling every evening. That's why your tours are ideal, which combine long-distance hiking and beautiful B&B. We are just before Sorrento, have just done stage 5. There was an absolute highlight, I think shortly before Torca: a pleasure gardener has created a grandiose resting place in front of his huge garden, with armchairs and loungers that you can move with a view of the 3 small private islands, with wood carving figures embedded in the forest behind them simply magical! The path was easy to walk on as you described, even in shorts. But sometimes we had to look a little to see where we were going, especially on the ascent to the pine forest. And in Torca, right after the gate through the long house, there was a pretty miserable piece of path, totally overgrown. An essential app, I have komoot, it's great. We stay at Massa Lubrense Hotel & Spa Relais Freedom, magnificent outdoor restaurant overlooking the sea and Capri and sunset…
Yesterday in Colli S. Pietro the Hotel Royal Hills was wonderful, with the charm of days gone by, a real waiter and a view of Naples.
Your Marseille tour is already planned for autumn – thank you very much!

We are thinking about combining stages 3 and 4, to make it a 20 km and 8:15 hr day.
We do that a lot in the mountains in summer, but do you think it is possible?
And if not; is there a stage that is the most beautiful or not so interesting?
